Francois Sagat is a gay porn star from France. A former fashion assistant, he abandoned that life for pornography after meeting someone in a chatroom. Since his humble beginnings as a pin-up he's appeared in films for Citibeur.com, a French site, and Titan, the monster US studio catering to gay men with a specific taste: big muscle men. Save a solo performance I downloaded a few weeks ago, I've never seen any of his films. I didn't watch the whole thing because I didn't want to ruin the architecture of his mythology: a sort of male Grace Jones figure. The difference between the two artists couldn't be more obvious, of course, but it was Jones I thought about when I saw Sagat on a porn site about two years ago. I don't think Sagat is as political as Jones, how she played with gender, masculinity and sexualtiy, but the image Sagat casts in and out of porn is a powerful one nonetheless. Whereas Jones and her partner Jean-Paul Goude were pushing towards the future, Sagat appears to be borrowing or coming from the ancient world. Instead of hair he has a tattoo of a Caesar haircut on his head, inspired he said in an interview, by Black and Latino men. Compact and powerfully built, he's somewhat hairy, and looking at him, he could very well have been a image taken from a Greek urn. The line he's created for himself is a marvellous one. It's as if he's stepped out of hand drawn history and into the present world, a temporal anomaly, a Centaur with a gorgeous tattoo on his skull.
